The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist assists in the development, implementation and maintenance of a broad spectrum environmental health and safety systems and initiatives, including the organization of programs and training for the prevention and management of environmental risks. The Specialist provides support and technical knowledge on environmental health and safety related topics for maintaining a healthy and safe work environment. 
 
As the Environmental Health & Safety Specialist, you will:
 
  • Coordinate the environmental program associated with the management of any applicable brownfield sites owned by the University;
  • Coordinate the development, implementation, and maintenance of the asbestos management program;
  • Investigate indoor air quality concerns and coordinate any required industrial hygiene sampling, including communicating with occupants, the Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC); and  Facilities Management;
  • Coordinate designated substance assessments and any subsequently required control programs, in collaboration with the Biosafety and Laboratory Safety Officer;
  • Coordinate the tobacco and smoking program, including the review and tracking of all designated smoking areas (DSA’s) and developing, implementing, and maintaining DSA locations on campus maps are up to date;
  • Administer Brock’s outdoor spill response program comprehensive program and training program;
  • Coordinate the compliance of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) program per the legislation;
  • Stay abreast of changes in applicable legislation, policies and trends for impact on the environmental health and safety programs; provide assistance in the development/revision of the programs by conducting research, gathering relevant industry information and drafting program development plans for the Director, Health and Safety to review;
  • Liaise with the Ministry of Labour Training & Skills Development (MOLTSD); Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry; and the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) as required;
  • Investigate incidents and accidents pertaining to environmental risks and prepare appropriate recommendations for prevention and future mitigation of risk;
  • Establish environmental health and safety protocols as required to mitigate associated risk;
  • Serve as a member on the University’s Sustainability Coordinating Committee;
  • Maintain applicable environmental legislation knowledge and advise on the impacts any changes to the legislation may have on the university.
 
What you need to Succeed…
 
  • A college diploma or University degree in Health, Safety and Environment or other relevant science discipline;
  • 4 - 6 years of related experience in environmental health and safety, including demonstrated success working with multiple stakeholders and a strong understanding of the complexity and potential hazards associated with a diverse University environment;
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations, and the demonstrated ability to stay abreast of industry developments and legislative changes;
  • Proven ability to respond effectively to a wide variety of environmental health and safety concerns, requiring the application of investigation, recognition, evaluation, control, design, and risk communication skills;
  • Strong presentation skills and ability to convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders; 
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with demonstrated effective negotiation skills, and ability to utilize tact and diplomacy when collaborating with stakeholders;
  • Project management experience and the ability to effectively manage multiple projects from conception to implementation;
  • Extreme accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment with changing/competing deadlines;
  • Strong judgement, analytical, and problem solving skills;
  • Solid computer competency including word processing, spreadsheet, database, web applications, and internet search engines.  
 
Preferred or Asset Skills:
 
Professional certification in industrial hygiene or health and safety.
 
Salary and Benefit Information
 
Salary Range: L $56,385 $76,933
This position includes full comprehensive benefits coverage and tuition waiver.
